Types of UPS systems

When choosing a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), be aware that there are several varieties, each functioning best within a certain power range.

  • Standby/Off-line UPS operate as standalone units that activate in the event of power failure from the primary source. Practical power range of 0-0.5 kVA. This type of UPS typically remains in standby mode until a power disruption occurs, at which point it switches to battery power to provide an uninterrupted power supply to connected devices. Standby/off-line UPS systems are generally less expensive than other types of UPS systems, but may have a longer transfer time between the loss of utility power and the switch to battery power.
  • Line Interactive/On-line UPS operates with the primary source flowing through and charging the battery, which enables smoother transitions in the event of power failure. Practical power range of 0.5-5 kVA. This type of UPS typically uses an Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) to correct minor fluctuations in voltage and switches to battery power in the event of a complete power loss or outage. The battery is continuously recharged when utility power is available.
  • Double Conversion On-Line UPS is similar to standby UPS except that rather than AC mains being the primary source of power, it’s the inverter. Practical power range of 5-5000 kVA. This type of UPS uses a double conversion process to continuously convert incoming AC power to DC power, and then back to AC power again. This process ensures a clean, stable and consistent power supply to connected devices, regardless of the quality of the incoming power source. In the event of a power outage, the UPS seamlessly switches to battery power without any interruption, providing an uninterrupted power supply.
