Power Saver Limited was contacted by Discovery Park regarding the potential upgrade of its current power protection unit. The upgrade was requested at one of the most important centres for pharmaceutical research and development, increasing efficiency and in turn saving on costs. Spanning over 220 acres, Discovery Park boasts state-of-the-art facilities designed to accommodate a diverse range of scientific and technical endeavours. Originally acquired in 1954 as Pfizer’s European facility, in 2012 revitalisation efforts began and, although Pfizer is still an integral part, this presented the opportunity for the transformation of the facility and now Discovery Park has positioned itself at the forefront of scientific research and innovation. The Park hosts a variety of companies engaged in diverse fields such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, environmental science and advanced technology.
Upgrading Power Protection
Discovery Park decided to look at upgrading their IT 300kVA UPS in Building 530. With an estimated efficiency of 70% the total UPS power was 2,080,836kW per annum with the I.T power at 1,456,583 per annum – Total UPS wastage – 624,251kW.
Power Saving £65k
Because of the unity power factor we were able to downgrade the size of the UPS, cutting UPS wastage down to 76,662kW which represented a potential annual saving of £65k while still keeping the load supported. We were able to add additional batteries to the existing battery strings to allow compatibility with the new UPS.
