Maintaining your Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS)
If you have any questions or would like to arrange some UPS maintenance please contact us.
In a recent bulletin, the Health & Safety Executive emphasized the significance of regular maintenance and servicing of your UPS system. As a responsible supplier, we want to bring your attention to this important bulletin. You can access it directly on the HSE website at www.hse.gov.uk/safetybulletins/upssystems-industrial-maintenance.htm. Our team is committed to ensuring the safety and reliability of your UPS system, so don’t hesitate to reach out to us for any maintenance or servicing needs.
Preventive UPS maintenance and regular servicing make sure that your uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and standby power systems will continue to run at optimum efficiency.
Every 6-12 months
- Check all fan grills and air inlets/outlets to ensure they are free of dust and debris. Clean as needed. Verify all fans are working. Conduct a visual inspection of all batteries and terminals for any signs of swelling or corrosion. Ensure the environment is suitable for the UPS, including ambient temperature and corrosive/damp atmosphere.
- Conduct a mains failure test to confirm the correct operation of the batteries. If necessary, use this test to verify that the UPS meets the required autonomy. Note that during this test, the critical load may be at risk if the UPS is still providing power.
- Perform a transfer to and from Static bypass test to confirm proper bypass operation.

Every 3-4 years
- To ensure maximum performance, it is recommended to replace the batteries every 3 or 4 years for all units that come with 5-year design life batteries as standard.
Every 5-7 years
- UPS Overhauls involve replacing capacitors and fans, which is typically required between the 5th to 7th year of the UPS lifespan. We suggest carrying out a maximum of two overhauls on a UPS before opting for a complete replacement. However, for our Modular UPS Multipower, a replacement Power Module is all that is required.
Every 7-8 years
- To ensure optimum performance, we recommend replacing the batteries of units that come with 10-year design life batteries as standard every 7 to 8 years.
Every 10 years
- Full UPS Replacement – It is recommended that the UPS is replaced after 10 years of operation.
An uninterruptible power supply is full of parts and components that will age over time and need replacing. Everything from UPS batteries to fans needs to be maintained to keep the UPS running when you need it. And there are occasions when even the most reliable UPS will experience faults or failure. It’s at critical that you have reliable, expert support to get you back up and running as soon as possible.
Power Saver’s engineers are trained by some of the UK’s biggest UPS suppliers, so they can maintain almost any UPS. Our plans are tailored to the bespoke needs of our customers. You choose the level of maintenance support you require.
- UPS maintenance is available for uninterruptible power supplies from the majority of global equipment manufacturers
- Bring all your equipment under one contract saving you cost and system-management time
- Rapid access to parts and engineering teams across the UK for the quickest response and repair times
- Standby power services and contracts available to suit your system and business needs
Ensuring that your standby power equipment is ready to operate should power fail is a vital part of your backup system management process. With many live and mechanical parts of a standby power system in continuous use, it is no surprise that key components can and will eventually fail. Investing in an annual standby power service or UPS maintenance contract is as necessary as having your system in place, as it will ensure that all critical parts of the system are ready to operate should they be required.
